The term “walkabout” is derived from an ancient Australian aboriginal ritual, in which an individual engages in a period of wandering in the wilderness, ostensibly as a spiritual journey. Many in our Western society have co-opted this useful and evocative term to refer to wanderings of any stripe for the purpose of personal reflection. I am not the first to use it thusly, and certainly won’t be the last.
